Chemung County Executive, Thomas J. Santulli
Proclaims the Month of August, 2009 as
Strong Kids Safe Kids Month in Chemung County!

prolamation

We call upon all citizens to increase their participation in our efforts to support children and families, thereby building Strong, Safe and Healthy Kids and strengthening the communities in which we live. We also call upon all citizens with children to participate in the many activities available during the month of August that help build Strong, Safe, and Healthy Kids such as:

  • Come to the Strong Kids Safe Kids Festival on 8/22/09 at the Chemung County Fairgrounds. • Visit your local Farmers Market and try a new seasonal fruit or veggie every day of the week.
  • Visit your local public library and read together daily... • Register Early for school, pre-school and childcare. Start your school year routines in mid-August and talk with your kids about school readiness. Visit www.chemungschoolreadiness.com for back to school tips.
  • Turn off the TV/Computer/Screens, get outside, and get active! Take your kids to a local park or playground, bring a picnic lunch and spend the day with each other.
  • Learn something new together: visit free Museum Mondays for kids at the Chemung Valley Historical Museum, local art museums, or take a hike and learn about nature at Tanglewood Nature Center.
  • Participate in FREE parent education at CIDS.
  • Enjoy family time at a free concert in the park. Concerts all month long at Brand Park, Elmira; Teal Park, Horseheads; Oakridge Park, Elmira Heights; and the Summer Stage at Eldridge.
  • Trolley into Mark Twain Country. Take a low cost, narrated tour of historic Elmira aboard "The Elmiran" trolley! Tours depart daily from the Holiday Inn Riverview at 760 E. Water St.
  • Check out 25 ways to make your kids safer at home, on the net, and when out and about at Take25.org. Make sure to teach your children their full name, address, home telephone number, your full name, and how to use 911.
  • Volunteer as a family. Check out opportunities at a local church, youth center, nursing home, the Strong Kids Safe Kids event, or simply help out a neighbor with shopping or yard care.
